The Leader of Opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly from Congress Debabrata Saikia has responded to the comments made by Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Rajen Gohain criticising over the lack of development in Nazira.

Debabrata Saikia has responded by saying that "the role of the opposition is to deliberate money and after that what happens to the execution is not in their hands".

Rajen Gohain (born 26 November 1950) in Nagaon, Assam is an Indian politician who served Member of parliament, Lok Sabha. He has represented the Nowgong constituency in Assam since 1999 to 2019 and is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. On 5 July 2016, Gohain was inducted to the Union Cabinet as a Minister of State in the Railway Ministry.

As such Debabrata Saikia further stated that Gohain under his tenure in Railways as a Central Minister didn't do much for the region. "We don't have a Rajdhani stoppage in Nazira even though it is a big constituency that connects Sibsagar and Charaideo districts".

Debabrata Saikia then claims that "this is an election gimmick by Gohain ahead of the 2021 Assembly Elections but people understand the real issue" and has dismissed Gohain's concerns as "crocodile tears for political gains".

Assam Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in April 2021. In the previous elections in 2016, the election brought a change of power as the Indian National Congress (INC), which had formed the government under Tarun Gogoi since 2001, lost its majority to the Bharatiya Janata Party led by Sarbananda Sonowal.

Debabrata Saikia was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2011 from Nazira constituency and retained his seat in 2016. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Assam, Hiteswar Saikia.
