Delhi and Dispur should hear the cries of indigenous people: AGP's Keshab Mahanta

Guwahati, January 23, 2019:

Keshab Mahanta, who has recently resigned as Cabinet Minister for Science and Technology, Water Resources following the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill fiasco in Assam, is present at the ‘Bajra Ninad’ (thunderous scream) held at Guwahati’s Latasil playground.

Speaking exclusively to InsideNE, he said: “We implore Delhi and Dispur to hear indigenous Assamese people’s cries.”

He also called on both the state and central government, both BJP, to hear the concerns of the people. : “Today, we request them to discard their selfish ideology and scrap this jati-destroying Bill. AGP, despite being in the Government, and we continue to raise our voice collectively against this Bill with political and non-political groups”, he said.

Speaking on the communal policy of the ruling BJP government and the chaos that it has created in society, he said: “We are having gathered here following the societal system of Saolung Sukapha and the cultural leader of Assam, Srimanata Sankardev, had created a non-communal structure of Assam.”

He also spoke on the integral role played by student organizations in protecting the interests of indigenous people of Assam: “Since independence days, whenever Assam would be in trouble, people like Anandaram Dhekial Phookan and Hemchandra Goswami were compelled to raise their voices to safeguard the interests of Assam.” He also added that in the history of Assam, student organizations have always been at the forefront of struggles to protect the identity of the state.

“The bottomline is, we have to safeguard the interests of all people who have settled in Assam and that is our primary goal”, added the AGP minister.
