Former three-time Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi on Thursday said that the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government failed to act “responsibly”, which is why communal riots have taken place in the national capital.
Condemning the transfer of Justice S Muralidhar from Delhi High Court to Punjab and Haryana High Court overnight, Tarun Gogoi said, “The centre transferred the judge overnight in order to ensure security of the ones in power.”
Gogoi turned down heavily on the ruling BJP over its negligence on the ongoing protests that initially centred around CAA and later turned communal. He questioned the duties and responsibilities of the Prime Minister in the wake of protests on one side and hosting US President Donald Trump on another.

“Modi was not with Trump for all the time. He had spent just a few hours with him. What was Modi doing the rest of the time? And even if he was there, he might have taken breaks. Being the main leader of this country, why did he not take the Delhi riots seriously? Neither has he appealed nor did he issue instructions to quell the riots,” Tarun Gogoi alleged.
“People are dying in Delhi and these people are sleeping. Trump calls him very strong. I don’t know if he really means it or he joked. Modi forgot everything after meeting Trump. I understand the concept of “Atithi Devo Bhavo” but when the home is burning, he could have taken some action at least. Also, why did Trump bring up the issue of ‘religious freedom’ despite knowing that ours is a secular country? Why did he raise the Kashmir issue and offer his mediation? This means that there is a dispute,” continued Gogoi.

The former Assam CM alleged that after the BJP came to power, communal tensions in the country have increased. “Democracy is in danger. The govt. is not paying attention to the things that it should. They say that Clause 6 will protect Assam’s culture, language, etc. They formed the committee also under the leadership of Biplab Sharma. The government had assured that the recommendations will be implemented. However, when the report was ready, the govt. ignored the committee. They have ignored the people of Assam. They should publish the report,” demanded Tarun Gogoi.
Taru Gogoi, who is known to raise his voice on his concerns, did not refrain from making another statement – They (BJP) talk at cheetah’s pace and work at a snail’s pace. “Hate Speech is the worst thing they have given to us. Instead of peace and harmony, a poisonous ideology is making its way,” opined Gogoi.
