After Cotton College, Dibrugarh University has also stood in line to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and have announced boycott of classes for an indefinite period.
Speaking to InsideNE, President of Dibrugarh University Students’ Union, Mridul Gogoi said, “The government’s decision to amend the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has brought threat to the people of Assam. We, the Dibrugarh University students’ fraternity have also understood the importance of protesting against this bill. We can feel the threat of losing our culture, land rights, economy etc, so we have decided to not attend classes for an indefinite period and prohibit the entry of any Minister from the Centre. Let the Centre take any action on this but the university students will stand by their words till the Bill is turned down.”
He also added: “The teacher’s fraternity has also started to oppose the Bill in written form, but we strongly feel that the agitation is not as successful as was needed, so I would like to request to all the universities of the state to step forward and move to the streets to oppose this Bill”
