Guwahati: Warning that the COVID-19 threat is far from over in Assam, minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today appealed the people to take all the necesssary precautions to prevent yet another spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state. He has urged the people not to form crowds in public places during the Durga Puja 2020 and maintain distance.

It is pertinent to mention here that Assam on Wednesday reported five more coronavirus deaths, taking the death toll to 889.

Sarma has reiterated time and again that "carelessness" during the festive season (marked by Durga Puja and Diwali festivities) could lead to a massive spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in Assam. Post the celebrations, the Minister opines. the COVID-19 graph will decline and the virus's impact will diminish further once a virus-killing vaccine is approved for use by the Centre.

Making an address during the ceremonial inauguration of the newly built flyover in Ganeshguri, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP-led Government intends to launch many more projects in the times to come.

The new extension to the Ganeshguri flyover is one among many flyovers in the city announced by the administration in the lead up to the Assembly polls to be held in 2021. In today's address, Biswa Sarma stated that some more "time" would would be needed to complete all these projects.

Issuing a warning about the surging number of COVID-19 cases in Assam, Biswa Sarma said, "Since the number of COVID-19 are rising, I appeal all to take the necessary precautions." Sarma also called for a "low-key" Durga puja this time around to arrest the spread of the virus.

The Minister commended the efforts of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Gautam Construction company for their "tireless efforts" in completing the construction work within 30 months.

Sarma also hailed the ruling BJP-led Government for undertaking several developmental projects. He also promised that several new bridges and flyovers shall be inaugurated in the coming few years for the benefit of Guwahati residents. The Minister also declared that footbridges will also be inaugurated in the city.
