New Delhi, November 5, 2019:

Abdul Khaleque, Congress MP from Barpeta Lok Sabha Constituency in Assam, on Wednesday urged the Government not to repeat the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in Assam. Khaleque's appeal came on the heels of Union Minister Amit Shah's pronouncement that a nationwide NRC exercise would be completed within 2024.

Khaleque, speaking at the Lok Sabha, contended that since the NRC in Assam was monitored by the Supreme Court and executed by the Central and State Governments, and 55,000 Government employees were employed for 4 years, and Rs 1,600 Cr was released to the NRC Secretariat by the Central Government.

Khaleque also said that the Ministry of External Affairs has stated the NRC is a "fair process based on scientific method". Kheleque urged the Government that no exercise should be done in the name of NRC again in Assam. He furtherurged the issuance of gazette notification on the final list of NRC published on August 31, and include the names of the genuine citizens whose names were included in the final list.

It may be mentioned here that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that a nationwide NRC will be conducted, and Assam will be included in it, with a revised cut-off date.
