Guwahati, March 25, 2019:

It has now come to light that some of the Anti-CAB protests were just a ruse for some of the young indigenous leaders of the movement to gain political power as one of the prominent young leaders of the indigenous people’s movement against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Ashini Chetia, has officially joined the BJP party, which intends to enact the Bill in the Northeast at any cost, on Monday. It may be mentioned that Chetia was often seen hobnobbing with the likes of KMSS Chief Akhil Gogoi during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill protests.

Chetia, who was adviser to the All Tai Ahom Student’s Union (AATASU) and resigned from the student body on Sunday, is said to be eyeing the Sonari Assembly seat, in case Topon Gogoi, who is the sitting Sonari MLA, is elected to the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, which will necessitate a bye-election.

Chetia was inducted into the BJP party at a formal ceremony held at the BJP headquarters in the BJP leaders such as state President Ranjeet Dass and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Addressing the media, Chedia said: “I am confident that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma will not harm the interests of Assam. I want to work for the people and indigenous peoples’ interests in Assam.”

Meanwhile, AJYCP leader Palash Changmai is also allegedly holding talks with the saffron party.
