'Drug-Education' is Needed to Finish Drug Menace Among School Children: Biswajit DaimaryBiswajit

New Delhi, July 4, 2019:

Rajya Sabha MP and firebrand Bodo People's Front (BPF) politician Biswajit Daimary on Thursday discussed the problem of drug addiction among school children in the Rajya Sabha during a 'Calling Attention' session held in the Upper House today.

Biswajit Daimary broached the issue while delivering his address at the Rajya Sabha today. Addressing the Speaker, Daimary said that the salvation of the upcoming generations from the perils of 'drug addiction' is a great need of the hour.

Presenting a solution to the drugs menace in the country, especially among minors, he said: "We need to start a program to alert people regarding the true nature of drugs as not many people know what drugs. Although we keep on talking about drugs, we do not actually know what drugs are", he said.

"What is heroin....what is brown sugar...nobody knows what these are. I don't even know if any of the MPs discussing durgs here have had experience with drugs", he said at one point, drawing gasps and sniggers.

The MP believes that people first experience addictive substances like cough syrup, Dendrite, cocaine, marijuana, cigarette, hookah, pan masala, and slowly begin a downward spiral into drug addiction.

"How do we convince people to stay away? If these things are unhealthy, they are to be stopped, which is where the law comes into play because law will determine the directions of use. However, the thing which has no benefits should be banned outright!", he said.

Lamenting the problem of drug addiction among Northeastern youths, he said that children who go to school, and live in hostels slowly fall into the grasp of drug addiction, and they become so disturbed that not even crores of rupees can cure them of the affliction.

"Thus, we should spread awareness and educate people as to what heroin is, what brown sugar is", he cautions. He further added that people will have to wean themselves off these habits themselves as laws cannot help solve the threat posed by drug addition (especially among the young).
