GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday, has said that the drugs worth Rs. 5000 crore are being traded annually in the state.
Attending the second day of “Seized Drugs Disposal Program” in Barhampur of Nagaon district of Assam, the chief minister said, “If we count the amount of drugs that were burnt in the past two days as the 10 or 20 percent of the total drugs present in the state, then it can be said that approximately drugs worth Rs 5000cr of are being traded annually in Assam.”
Around 9.70 kgs of Heroin, three packets of Ganja, 2, 71,908 tablets, 253.301 kgs of cannabis, 977 grams of opium were destroyed in Rangajan field of Barhampur constituency in Nagaon district on Sunday.

"Drugs abuse is like a pandemic and the people responsible should be punished. We have seen many families being destroyed because of drugs abuse. There are tons of parents who are dying every day seeing their children sulking into the addiction" he said.
Quoting Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, the Chief Minister said, “Drug addicts are not our real enemies. Unable to resist the temptation, they say yes to anything that will bring them closer to drugs.”
The Chief Minister said that providing safety to the parents of drug abusers and protect the youths of the state from further drug abuse have been objective of his government.
"Our first objective is to stop the availability by seizing the drugs brought into the state outside and prevent it from spreading to different towns and villages", he said.
From May 10 to July 15, 876 cases illegal drugs have been registered in the state. Altogether 1493 drug peddlers have arrested. Nearly 20 kg heroin, 8276 ganja, 14 kg opium, over 67000 cough syrup bottles along with pother substantial amount of drugs have been seized by the Assam police.
The seized drugs amount to approximately, Rs163.89 crores.
