GUWAHATI: The Assam Government on Friday announced to reopen the schools and all other educational institutes in the state from January 1

Eventhough all educational institutes are reopening in the state, the nursery and primary level classes will be conducted in a staggered manner from January 1 in order to maintain proper social distancing.

It was informed that during the first phase of reopening of schools in Assam, attendance will not be made mandatory.

Though the state government has made the decision to reopen all educational institutes in Assam from January 1, no Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been issued for the reopening of schools by the government yet.

Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while announcing the decision to reopen schools, had said, “Detailed SOPs regarding reopening of nursery schools will be released soon by the state’s Education Department.”

The education minister had also said that the government’s decision to reopen schools for the elementary level will be subject to certain conditions -- if COVID cases decline and parents have no objection to sending their children to the schools.

All schools and colleges in Assam were shut down in the last week of March 2020 due to the rapid spread of the Covid-19 pandemic across the country and the imposition of the nationwide lockdown. The schools will be reopening in Assam after more than 10 months.
