Guwahati, February 11, 2019:

The Cachar Police have detained eight individuals at the Sonabari Ghat area in Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday night, based on suspicion.

Among the eight individuals, seven are suspected to be Rohingyas while one is a suspected Bangladeshi immigrant. The owner of the house, Saidul Islam Borbhuyan, where these individuals had been residing, has also been arrested in the process.

Commenting on the situation, the Addl. SP, Border, Gaurab Agarwal said that the owner of the house had rented his house out to the apprehended and they had been residing in that house for the last four months. “Today, during the investigation process, he will be questioned on what basis he gave them the house on rent.”

Meanwhile, the detained immigrants have confessed that they have moved to Silchar in Assam through the neighboring state of Tripura.
