'Emergency-Like Situation Prevails in Assam': Akhil Gogoiemergency

Guwahati, August 27, 2019:

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday staged a protest in the streets of Guwahati city to protest the construction of the Lower Subansiri Dam Project. At one point during the protest, Gogoi also alleged that Assam is seeing an 'emergency-like' situation at the moment.

The peasant leader has alleged that a resolution will be taken today to open all the dams in the Northeast during a Government meet organized by the NHPC, and marched in the streets of Guwahati city's Khanapara area to protest against the same.

Akhil condemned the move and said that the KMSS will oppose the Subansiri dam project, adding that the organization will give a memorandum to Union Minister Rajkumar Singh. "If the Subansiri dam is opened, all the dams in the Northeast will be opened, which will pose a great threat to Assam", he said.

Gogoi also said that the construction is completely "illegal", and the new design and environment clearance given for the construction of the dam is not legit.

He further alleged that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is not on the side of the Northeast, and said that the project must be scrapped completely. The peasant leader added that electricity prices will soar if the project is completed.

Bewildered people looked on as Gogoi was surrounded by police personnel as he led around 50 men to the site of the protest. The police told Gogoi to move to the protest ground, however, he refused to budge from the streets.

After having an altercation with the policemen, Gogoi alleged that Assam is seeing an emergency-like situation, and alleged that the current atmosphere in the state is 'undemocratic'.
