People illegally setting up houses and shops on a drain at Jorabat on Assam-Meghalaya border were evicted by the Kamrup (metro) district authorities on Thursday.
The drive was carried out as their settlement had blocked the flow of water through the drain causing artificial floods in the area. On Wednesday, the authorities had issued an eviction notice to them.
It may be recalled that the authorities had carried out similar drives in the area even in the past but without any success. The locals alleged that the eviction drives were mere eyewash as no strong action is ever taken against big business establishments that are run from encroached government land.
According to officials, similar eviction drives will be carried out in and around Six Mile, Panjabari and Botahghuli areas of Guwahati.
