GUWAHATI: Former Assam bureaucrat and social worker Mahtab Uddin Ahmed passed away due to multiple organ failure after a brief battle with COVID-19 at a private hospital here today.
He was 65 when his breathed his last around 10.20 am today. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Sources close to him said Ahmed fell a victim of co-morbidity as he was diabetic and had other age related ailments as well.

“His body has been taken to his Hatigaon residence. His janeja (funeral) will be performed at Sijubari No 2 Kabarstan at 9 am tomorrow,” one of his friends said.
An IAS officer, Ahmed hailed from Mangaldoi and held several key positions as commissioner and secretary in the Assam government.
The Assam Civil Society, an NGO working for the unification of Assamese society cutting across religious lines, of which Ahmed was an active office bearer, has condoled his demise.
“It’s an irreparable loss to the Assam Civil Society, a void that can never be filled. Praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul. We also extend our sympathy with the bereaved family and pray to the Almighty that He give them strength to bear with the loss,” said ACS office bearer Shahjahan Talukdar.

The Cotton College Muslim Hostel Alumni Association, which Ahmed founded as the president during his student days, has also condoled his demise.
“Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, IAS, retd Commissioner was very energetic and a prominent Social Worker. Being a retd Commissioner, he had many advantages to render Social Service at the highest level. A great loss to the Society and the Community. The Members of CMH Alumni Assn deeply mourn the sad, unfortunate and untimely demise of its First President,” the association said in a statement.
