Ex-Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to Join the BJP?

"Who is next?" That must be the question on everyone's minds after senior Congress leaders Bhubaneshwar Kalita, Gautam Roy, and and Santiuse Kujur defected to the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) within a week. A section of the media have reported that it could be none other than Mukul Sangma, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and longtime member of the Congress party, who could be donning the saffron robes next. However, Sangma himself has rubbished these reports and ruled out joining the BJP.

As per reports, Mukul Sangma is not the only Northeast Indian leader who is rumored to join the BJP, as former Dibrugarh MP Paban Singh Ghatowar, who was vanquished this year by Rameswar Teli, is said to be in talks with the saffron unit.

Either of these leaders joining the BJP would come as a huge setback to the already-eroded Congress party. Moreover, these developments are shocking, to say the least, as both Sangma and Ghotowar have been staunchly opposed to the ideology of the BJP in the past. Mukul Sangma, in particular, has chided the NPP leader Conrad Sangma for his links to the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convened by Assam's BJP Minister Himanta Biswa Sarwa and was one of the strongest opposers of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the lead-up to its lapse at the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.
