Anup Chetia, leader of the pro-talks faction of insurgent group United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) on Tuesday urged the people of Assam to join hands in unity to fight against the amendment of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
Speaking to InsideNE, Anup Chetia said, “First of all the people of Assam must unite to take it to the streets and we will stand by their side as we always do supporting the protest against the government passing the bill. When asked about the role of parliamentarians , he added that the Assam MP’s do not possess any character of being an MP so there is no use of talking to them. People themselves have brought these MP’s back into power as we can see the example of the recent Panchayat election.”
He further stated, “It is high time for the people of Assam to re-think on it and if the people are thinking of losing their identity putting everything on stake, the future generations will not forgive us. We must create a situation so that we can carry these protests against the government and the bill in a democratic way.”
