The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police has arrested a total of 37 persons on the charge of cheating people by running a fake call centre at the Zoo Road locality in Guwahati. Among these 37 people, nine are women.
A team of the CID on Monday night conducted a raid at a call centre Avenir Pvt. Ltd.
Addressing the media, the CID officials confirmed the development and mentioned that 37 persons including nine women have been arrested for allegedly involved in making fraud calls to customers to cheat them.
The officials further mentioned that the prime accused Rajesh Khan alias Rajesh Mukherjee alias Rajesh Bhai is originally from Gujarat. The team of the CID seized 22 monitors, 40 CPUs, one laptop, two pen drives, and 32 mobile phones along with other suspicious items.
The CID has registered a case (No CID PS 12/2019) under sections 120B, 419, 420, 468, 471 and 384 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 against the accused.
As per reports, the call centre had stored a database of over seven lakh American citizens. The members of the call centre have already looted around Rs 50 lakh. Avenir Pvt. Ltd was in operation in Guwahati since February 2019.
