Fake ULFA-I cadres apprehended in Tinsukia

Tinsukia, October 1, 2018:

In a joint operation by Assam Police and the Punjab Regiment, two fake ULFA-I cadres were apprehended in Tinsukia.

The apprehended cadres have been identified as Bitupan Neog and Gourikanta Moran. One .22 pistol and two live bullets have been seized from their possession. 

The duo were apprehended based on the inputs from a local businessman whom they demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh in the name of ULFA(I) cadres of deceased Jaan Asom and Bibek Asom.

Talking to InsideNe, Mugdhajyoti Mahanta, SP Tinsukia said that 22 such cases of extortion has come to light in Tinsukia district alone in the past three years. Confirming that youngsters are mainly involved in these type of cases, they easily gets involved in these type of crimes as they are lured by easy money. Mr Mahanta also said that carrying out such extortion drives in the upper Assam belt becomes easier as fear psychosis of militants still prevails among the people.
