Rumours over “dingi kota manuh” (man who chops off the heads of others) have set in across villages bordering Meghalaya in Lower Assam’s Goalpara district.
Stricken by panic, the members of many families have stopped staying at their homes at night and go to sleep in the houses of friends and relatives.
The locals said they were frightened following unconfirmed reports that the “dingi kota manuh” descends on villages at night and chop off the heads of people. There has not been a single such incident so far but that could least allay the fears of villagers.
Sensing the gravity of the situation, the district authorities have started organizing awareness programmes in the affected villagers. They have also ensured night patrolling by policemen.
There is a suspicion that the anti-social elements might try to take advantage of the situation.
