Guwahati, April 29, 2019:

An FIR has been lodged against the headmaster of a school at the Kamalabari police station in Majuli who forcefully chopped off the hair of 17 students which is in conflict with the centuries-old neo-Vaishnavite practice of wearing long hair.

The action has hurt the sentiments of the people following Sattriya tradition according to which Satra followers do not use any artificial treatment on their hair and keep them long.

As per reports, the headmaster in defense claimed that some of them styled their hair as per the latest fashion.

The parents of the 17 boys complained that the matter should have been discussed with them before the school authorities decided to take such a step.
