GUWAHATI: The Assam unit of the Indian National Congress (INC) has urged the Assam government to take up the firing of bullets at its MLA Rupjyotyi Kurimi in a disputed Assam-Nagaland border territory up with the government of the latter state.
The government of Assam should take it up with the Government of Nagaland to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future, wrote Assam Congress' spokesperson Bobbeeta Sharma, issuing a communique.
"Assam Pradesh Congress Committee strongly condemns the attack on Congress MLA Sri Rupjyoti Kurmi when he had gone to inspect encroachment in Dissai Valley reserve forest area in Mariani," she further wrote.
She further added that it is a "serious issue and shocking that he was attacked by miscreants in the Assam-Nagaland border area."

"The Government of Assam should immediately apprehend the culprits. Since the matter of border dispute in the area is in court, in principle both Nagaland and Assam had agreed to a joint patrolling in the forest area in September 2020, she further added, before going on to ponder "even after such an arrangement how and who perpetrated such an attack is a grave matter."
The life of an elected representative of Assam has been threatened while he was discharging his duties for which APCC urges the Government that the security cover of the Hon'ble MLA should also be enhanced at the earliest, she added.
Earlier today, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi also wrote to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urging him to allocate more security personnel to Kurmi following the attack.
