Flood Recedes in Upper Assam while Lower Assam Reels underwater

Guwahati, July 25, 2019:

Although the floodwater level has receded in Upper Assam, the situation in lower Assam has worsened due to the release of excess water from the Kuricchu Hydropower Plant reservoirs in Kuricchu River in Bhutan.

As per the latest update of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDM) some districts of Western Assam- Barpeta, Nalbari, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri and South Salmaraare facing a rise in flood water level.

As on today, a total of 2,753 villages in 67 revenue circles of 18 districts viz. Dhemaji, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat and Cachar, are having flood waters affecting a population of 34, 92, 734.

Presently, 833 Relief Camps are operational in the districts of Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat and Jorhat districts with 1,95,159 inmates and 102 Relief Distribution Centres in the districts of Lakhimpur,Darrang, Barpeta, Kokrajhar,Kamrup, Morigaon and Sivasagar.

One person has lost his life due to the flood in Dhubri district in the last 24 hours.

The water level of Rivers at Danger Level: Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri, JiaBharali at N.T. Road Xing (Sonitpur), Puthimari at N.H. Rd. Xing (Kamrup); Manas at N.H.Rd. Xing (Barpeta) and Beki at Rd. Bridge (Barpeta).
