BJP spokesperson and former MLA, Sarat Saikia passed away at a hospital in Kolkata. He was suffering from renal disorder.
He was 71.
Sarat Saikia is survived by his wife Sewali Saikia, a son and a daughter.
Saikia was elected as the member of the Assam Assembly in May 2001 under the banner of Indian National Congress from 105-Mahmara Assembly Constituency. Mahmara forms part of the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency.
Later, he defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party and was holding the position of the party spokesperson in the state when he passed away. Saikia joined the saffron party at Jorhat airport in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.
