The Finance Department of the Government of Assam has released an amount of Rs 149 crore for distributing free uniform to 37 lakh school students in the state.
Students of both lower and upper primary schools shall avail free uniforms from the government. It may be noted that the free uniform scheme of the government was available earlier too but had come to a halt in 2014-15.
The scheme resumes in the current year after the central government has agreed to provide further funds for the same, after the state government requested.
Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that the cost of each uniform would come around Rs 400. He also said that the scheme would continue in the coming years too.
