Gauhati High Court rules in favour of Atul Bora’s re-election as AGP president

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday quashed a lower court ruling that had stayed the election of state agriculture minister Atul Bora as president of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

AGP general secretary Kamala Kanta Kalita today said the court has ruled that Bora and his committee will be able to continue in office for the next three years.

Addressing the media on it, AGP counsel Bijon Mahajan said: “The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday scrapped the lower court’s order and ruled that the party election through which Atul Bora was re-elected as the president was legal.”

A lower court here had ruled that that the two-day general body meeting of AGP on August 26 and 27 last year, in which Bora was re-elected as party president, was invalid and in violation of an injunction issued on August 26.

The high court’s order paved the way for Bora and the newly formed committee under him would continue in office for the next three years as provided in the party constitution.

Earlier, the lower court was of the view that despite receiving the injunction of the court and in spite of having information of the stay order through media, the party disregarded the court and proceeded with the meeting, which was also in violation of Covid-19 protocol.
