The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will resume its services for the general patients from tomorrow, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The decision to reopen the hospital has been taken after 2200 samples of doctors, nurses, staff, and people in surrounding areas have tested negative for coronavirus.

The samples were collected after a PG student – Dr. Lithikesh – was tested positive for coronavirus on May 7.
Following the detection of the case, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) was closed down for general patients and hostel 1 and 5 were declared containment zones.

On May 7, another three persons including a relative of an employee of the Dr. B Borroah Cancer Institute (BBCI) were tested positive. Later, the district administration declared Amiyanagar in Chandmari and BBCI as containment zone.
Assam has registered a total of 86 positive cases so far; of which 41 have been cured/ discharged and two died. The state has the second-highest positive coronavirus cases in the Northeast.
Assam has sought lockdown extension by two weeks more to mitigate the spread of coronavirus, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.

“We want lockdown extension by two more weeks. We have also written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the implementation of lockdown rules in the state in near future,” the CM said.
Further, the CM informed that the state government has urged the Centre for economic assistance. “We have sought economic assistance from the Central government as the state has incurred a loss of Rs 1000 crore in recent times,” he added.
