Gauhati University Professor Chandan Kumar Goswami Excluded from Final NRC Listgoswami

Guwahati, September 14, 2019:

Chandan Kumar Goswami, a Professor of Gauhati University of Assam, has been remarkably left out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The Professor, who has been serving as Professor in the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of GU since 2006, lamented the current state-of-affairs, while talking to Inside Northeast.

"My name has been rejected from the NRC. I had applied online, but they rejected my name despite any complaints", he told us.

"I was told that I had nothing to worry about, and I was assured that my name would be published in the final list", he says. However, to his utter dismay, Goswami discovered that his name, along with that of his family, had been rejected from the list.

"All four of us -- including my mother, my wife, and my kid, have been deprived. However, somewhat curiously, many other family members have been included with the same legacy date", says Goswami.

The University Professor believes that that his name has been excluded due to a blunder on the part of the NRC authorities. "The were unable to find the application as I had filed in online. I was sent to another NSK centre. Although I was sent there, they did not have my application. But later, I was informed that I would be included. However, their assurances proved futile as I was rejected", Goswami laments.

"I do not know what to do next. I fear that I might have to file a case in this regard", Goswami said.

It may be mentioned here that many bona fide citizens of India, including the kin of President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, and a descendant of Gorkha martyr, Chabilal Upadhyaya, have been excluded from the final NRC list.

This test has been decried by many, including the ruling BJP party, as as exercise in futility. The All Assam Students'; Union, who have long been demanding the exercise in Assam to weed out 'Bangladeshi invaders' have also stated that they could possibly move the Supreme Court in regards to the matter.
