Assam Pradesh Congress President (APCC) Ripun Bora on Friday raised the issue of suicide cases reported in Assam’s detention camps where the 'undocumented migrants' are reportedly being housed.
Speaking on the matter, Ripun Bora said, “NRC, D-Voters are two major issues in Assam. Several lakh people have been made 'D-Voter' on the ground of being illegal migrants. As a result, the Foreigners Tribunal during the past one year declared several thousand genuine Indians as foreigners. Meanwhile, five genuine Indian citizens committed suicide at the detention camp out of depression and frustration.”

He further added that in the draft NRC and recently published additional list of NRC, names of a large number of genuine Indian citizens belonging to the Hindu-Bengali, Gorkha, Tribal and Adivasi People have been dropped.
He added, “Even the names of family members of Freedom Fighters, Sahitya Academy Award Winners, Army Personel, and War Martyrs are also left out in the NRC. Meanwhile, more than 50 persons died out of heart attack for not finding their names in the draft NRC.”
“I urge upon the Government to scrutinize the names of the alleged immigrants in a meticulous way keeping above political consideration so that no Indian citizen is harassed in this way. It is a matter of shame and serious concern that the genuine Indians of our Country are leveled as foreigners/ Illegal migrants,” added the APCC president.
