The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has been without the Mayor for the past one month. The term of Mrigen Sarania, the last man to have served in the post, expired on July 31 but the new Mayor is yet to be elected.
Talking to InsideNE, a source said, “After the last GMC council was dissolved in July, no elections were held and as such, there is no Mayor in the city”.
Nobody knows who runs the GMC now. The state government seemed to have asked Principal Secretary Ajay Tiwari to function as the Council’s administrator.
The source said handling funds is difficult under the administrator. And since there is no Mayor, people are going through a harrowing time as they do not know whom to approach over certain problems. There is a possibility that the next election will be held by November, the source added.
