GUWAHATI: To ensure the sale of fresh and hygiene mutton in Guwahati, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) orders mutton sellers to seal the meat from contamination before selling it.
Issuing norms today, GMC said that the mutton vendors must keep the mutton inside glass chambers or tiled boxes to protect it from insects, dust, and other contaminants.
It further said that animals must be slaughtered in a scientific manner at slaughterhouses to ensure a safe supply of healthy meat for consumers, said GMC.
Unscientifically slaughtered animals produce toxins that are dangerous to eat and can cause major health problems.
"Quality seal must also be there on the meat that is to be sold, to be issued by the GMC," it added.

It has been observed that although the GMC's regulations prohibit open meat sales, some people continue to do so in an unsanitary manner.
Today, the Veterinary Branch and Enforcement Branch of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) along with the Assam Police team carried out an inspection at different poultry and meat shops across Guwahati against the unhygienic sale of meat.
During the inspection, it was found that no rules were followed by the shopkeepers, and meat found to be not slaughtered in slaughterhouses.
GMC seized around 80 kgs of mutton from those unauthorized meat shops and disposed the same at Boragaon Dumping ground.
Also, two meat shops were sealed as they could not produce any valid licence to the GMC authority, and an amount of Rs. 20,500/- was imposed as a penalty.
The inspection drive was carried out at Ganeshguri Bazar, Hatigaon Road, Bhetapara Ghoramara, Beharbari, Nalapara, Lakhra Bazar, Saukuchi, Lalganesh, Colony Bazar, Kalapahar, B.K. Kakati Road and Ulubari area of Guwahati.
