Gorkhas Demand 'Indigenous' Recognition in Assam

Silchar, December 29, 2019:

The Gorkhas of Assam have demanded “indigenous” recognition in order to protect their constitutional rights, including land rights.

The National President of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP), Sukhman Moktan said that the Gorkhas should be recognized as indigenous so that during the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, their constitutional rights are protected.

Moktan further appealed the Gorkhas across the country to write Gorkha in the community segment and mention Nepali/Gorkha language in the language segment during the National Population Register (NPR) and National Census 2021.

It may be mentioned here that a joint representation was made by Gorkha CSOs of Assam including BGP to the Empowered Committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
