Gorkhas staged a three- hour sit-in protest on Friday over exclusion from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) final list at Sachal in Guwahati.
The three- hour sit-in protest was led by a group of associations namely, The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union, Assam Gorkha Sanmelan, Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisaghar Kamrup (M) Zila Samiti, along with various other regional organizations of Kamrup (M).
The protestors have demanded immediate inclusion of the Gorkhas whose names were excluded from the NRC final list.
They said, “The exclusion of the indigenous communities from the NRC is a conspiracy and NRC State Coordinator, Prateek Hajela is to be blamed for this. He has given space to Bangladeshi nationals in the NRC but did not give importance to identifying the indigenous people.”
They also made it clear that under no circumstances the Gorkhas will approach the Foreigners’ Tribunals. Also, they appealed to the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi for directing immediate steps of NRC correction.
The protestors have demanded the state and the central governments to initiate immediate actions in this regard. They have threatened to intensify their protest if their demands are not fulfilled.
