GUWAHATI OR GAUHATI ?

Guwahati, October 3, 2018:

The Gauhati High Court on Wednesday has sent notice to the Assam Government to file an affidavit in order to clear the puzzlement in using the spelling of the Assam’s capital- Gauhati or Guwahati.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Advocate Arup Borbora in order to diminish the puzzle in the spelling of Guwahati.

It is noted that most of the important institutions use Gauhati viz : Gauhati High Court, Gauhati University, Gauhati Municipal Corporation, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital etc.

Speaking to InsideNe, Senior Journalist Dr Sanjoy Paul said, “It isn’t much a pain to pronounce Gauhati or Guwahati. Only the old institutions have the name as Gauhati which should not create much problem as citizens of the state, we generally know the place. Even Calcutta University remains the same after the state name changed to Kolkata. If the institution is okay with the name then there should not be a problem.”

While speaking to Poonam Nath, a student said that it gets very difficult when the search for institutions or addresses on the web as when the search for Guwahati University notification, the results come up as Gauhati university which creates a confusion.
