Guwahati Police on the prowl against sex offenders; to be punished as per Law: CP after ISBT incident

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta today asserted that the city police are on the lookout for 'sexual offenders' so that they can be punished under the relevant sections of the Law.

"Several sexually inappropriate acts have been brought to our notice, and of course, the culprits will be brought to book under the relevant sections of the law," Gupta told Inside Northeast, against the backdrop of the alleged sexual harassment of an Arunachali girl in the city's bus terminal that shook up social media recently.

"You have to understand that there are already several legal provisions that can be taken against such offenders and the Guwahati city police as well as the district administration shall leave no stone unturned to ensure that they are punished," Gupta told this publication.

The Commissioner further added that the police force of Guwahati is also monitoring social media to track down unlawful activities. "The police is now actively monitoring social media as it has become a legitimate medium to keep track of unlawful activities. Many people try to reach us via this medium. A cyber cell has also been set up in Guwahati to help in this regard. In regards to yesterday's incident, if a complaint is filed, we will be prompt to take action against the suspected harasser."

In a sensational incident, Chello Meme from Kurung Kumey District of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday accused a man of touching her inappropiately at the ISBT in Guwahati. Chello was en route to delhi and was waiting there before her departure.

Meme decided to call out the man in public and teach him a lesson after a crowd gathered in the spot. The man was forced to apologize in public.

After Ms. Meme uploaded the video on her social media, there was a massive outpouring of support towards the victim, with netizens questioning how such an incident could happen in broad daylight. Naturally, there have been calls for the city police to step up it's vigilance against such acts in the aftermath of the shocking incident.
