After a period of 20 years, the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden has brought in a pair of ostriches under an animal exchange programme.
The pair of ostriches were brought along with pair of striped hyenas from Bhagwan Borsa Biological Park, Ranchi in exchange of a black panther and three leopard cats.
The animals were brought under the supervision of a veterinary doctor by road on a truck all the way from Ranchi. The animals have been put on specific enclosures and now visitors can see them.
The zoo is also expected to get some Lady Amherst’s pheasants, golden pheasants and silver pheasants. These birds will be brought from Darjeeling and the exchange is expected to take place later this month. At present, there are about 1,100 animals at Guwahati Zoo.
