KOKRAJHAR: Even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) grow closer to forging an alliance and thus, the new administration in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), former Chief Hagrama Mohilary has expressed hope that his Bodoland People's Front (BPF) party shall continue its alliance with the saffron unit and thus, remain in power.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mohilary said, "In 2016, we had entered an alliance with the BJP and formed the Government. In Delhi, we have extended support to the NDA Government at the Centre. Therefore, I would like to request the BJP party to form a Government since the BJP-BPF alliance is still intact. I am hopeful that this alliance will continue. As the leader of the BPF, I am requesting the BJP to help us form the Government."

Mohilary further added that he has held discussions with the top brass of the BJP, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. "I believe that the BJP-BPF will form the Government in the BTC," he added.

Responding to a query, Mohilary added, "The BJP-BPF alliance has been intact so far. Whether the BJP helps us is not is their "dharma". However, we are requesting the BJP for help."

Himanta Biswa Sarma, meanwhile, yesterday said that he has talked to the BPF supremo over the phone. "A new Government will be formed as soon as two parties come together -- whether it be the BJP-BPF or the BJP-UPPL. Either way, the BJP will be a part of the government. I have talked to Hagrama Mohilary over the phone and we will decide on our future course of action soon."

Biswa Sarma has also stated that for the implementation of the BTR treaty, the CEM must be a Bodo heading a regional party -- implying that it could be either Promod Boro or Hagrama Mohilary.

The BPF won all 3 elections in the BTC after its formation in 2003, and is currently a part of the ruling coalition in Dispur that also includes the AGP and the BJP.
