The Hailakandi district administration on Thursday observed “Shok Divas” (Day of Grief) to mourn the deaths of people in the 2004 bomb blast in Dhemaji and other terror-related incidents.
The Tri-colour was flown at half-mast at all government establishments with a minute’s silence and a pledge against terrorism in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan and other dignitaries.
The blast during Independence Day celebrations at Dhemaji
College was triggered by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) as retribution for defying its diktat to boycott the function. Thirteen people, including ten children, were killed and 40 others were injured.
The outfit, which initially denied any role, accepted responsibility five years later and sought apology from the Assamese people.
