Hailakandi, December 8, 2018:

The Hailakandi district administration is geared up to hold the panchayat election on Sunday.

Distribution of polling materials to the presiding and polling personnel that began on Friday was completed hours on Saturday.

Altogether 638 polling personnel left for different destinations accompanied by police and other security personnel. Superintendent of Police, Mohneesh Mishra said the district has sufficient security forces to tackle law and order and to ensure smooth conduct of the polls.

Eighty- eight zonal and sector officers have been detailed and 77 non-ACS officers vested with powers of executive magistrate for smooth and peaceful conduct of the election to 11 ZPMs, 62 APMs, 62 GPPs and 620 GPMs. The district has total electorates of 3,87,132, of whom 2,13,309 are males and 1,73,823 females. 3,220 candidates are in the fray – 80 for ZPM, 345 for GPP, 335 for APM and 2,460 for GPM.

Election Observer Nirmal Kanti Debnath has been making whirlwind visits to different parts of the district, including sensitive and very sensitive polling stations, to get first-hand account of the law and order situation ahead of the polls. Debnath, who has been camping at the circuit house for the past couple of days, interacted with the local people and apprised the Assam State Election Commission and the district administration about the situation at ground zero.

Debnath has expressed satisfaction over the arrangements being made by the district administration for holding of election in 626 polling stations across the district.
