Along with the rest of Assam, 'Sok Divas' (day of mourning) was observed in Hailakandi Friday.
At a programme organized by the district administration at its headquarters along with officers and employees, floral tributes were paid to the children and other persons who lost their lives in a bomb blast at Dhemaji on Independence Day in 2004.
The national flag was flown half-mast to mourn the death of innocents killed in a bomb blast while attending Independence Day celebrations at Dhemaji defying a boycott call by militants 15 years ago and also other victims of militant violence.
A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the children and other persons who lost their lives in extremist violence and the officers and staff took the pledge to work unitedly for peace and harmony and raise their voices in unison against all acts of militant and extremist violence.
An all faith prayer meeting was held to mark the occasion. Additional Deputy Commissioner, EL Faihraem, District Development Commissioner, Madhumita Choudhury, SDO (Sadar), Prodip Timing, Circle Officer, Hailakandi, Tridip Roy and other officials and employees and senior citizens were present on the occasion.
13 people, mostly school children aged between 12 and 14 years, were killed and several others injured in a bomb blast triggered by ULFA at Dhemaji College ground where they had gathered for Independence Day celebrations in 2004.
