New Delhi, July 4, 2019:

And the heads continue to roll! In the latest shake-up in the 'Grand old party', former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Harish Rawat has resigned as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in-charge.

Rawat's resignations comes close on the heels of Rahul Gandhi's resignation as the President of India's oldest political party.

Rawat tendered his resignation taking "moral responsibility" for the party's poor showing in the Lok Sabha polls in 2019, in which the Congress party managed to win a mere three seats in Assam, while main rivals BJP swept the polls, winning seven of the fourteen seats in the state.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "I am responsible for the below-expected result of the party in Assam as in-charge of the state. I accept my shortcoming and resign as general secretary in-charge of state."

However, Rawat stated that Rahul should continue as the President of the party and could possibly lead them to victory in 2022.

It is to be mentioned that Rawat had been appointed as the in-charge of the party in Assam by then-Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had announced his resignation on Wednesday through a heartfelt 'open letter' in which he announced that he would continue to be a part of the 'fight' against the BJP despite stepping down as the leader of the party.
