Guwahati, January 14, 2019:

A Scheduled Tribe (ST) Committee has been formed by the Assam Government under the guidelines of the Central Government to monitor the status of the existing tribal communities of Assam following the demand of scheduled tribe status by the six new communities of Assam.

The communities are: Tai Ahom, Tea tribes, Chutia, Kochari, Moran and Mottock.

The committee will be headed by State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Chandan Brahama as Convenor. The other committee members are Tapan Gogoi, Pallab Lochan Das and Naba Doley.

The committee is formed to analyse and send modalities for granting Schedule tribe status to the six above mentioned communities of Assam without damaging the rights of the existing tribe.
