Guwahati (Assam), Aug 22, 2018:

In a major development, Gauhati High Court has directed Guwahati City Police Commissioner Hiren Chandra Nath to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation within 60 days to a person who was tortured during police custody.

The victim Ajit Medhi works as an assistant with an advocate in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Kamrup (Metro). He had filed an FIR at the city’s Chandmari Police Station, besides filing a complaint at the CJM court, alleging illegal detention at Panbazar Police Station between 21st to 23rd August in 2011. He had also alleged that the police had tortured him during the “illegal detention”.

Meanwhile, speaking to InsideNe, the Police Commissioner Nath remarked, “Since the case was filed in 2011, I am unaware of the facts. Moreover, I did not receive any copy of the court order. However, if the court has issued such a directive, it will be followed.”
