GUWAHATI: Amiya Kalita, a traffic policeman from Guwahati, Assam, has received the moniker of "hero in uniform" on social media courtesy of a picture that was uploaded from the official handle of the Guwahati Traffic Police in which he can be seen cleaning the road by spraying it with water.
Kalita, who was stationed in Dispur, was seen cleaning the road by spraying water at the Supermarket junction, where work is underway on a brand new flyover. That stretch of road has taken a complete battering in recent times due to the ongoing construction works. By going the extra mile during his working hours, Kalita has garnered online praise and attention on social media.

The policeman, who was identified as Amiya Kalita of Dispur Traffic branch, was also awarded Rs. 5000 by the department for his dedication towards his duty.
Amiya Kalita became a popular face on social media after a picture of him cleaning the road went viral after it was uploaded from the official handle along with the words, “UBC 439 Amiya Kalita of Dispur Traffic branch was seen cleaning the road at Supermarket point for convenience of commuters. We salute his sense of public service. @DGPAssamPolice has announced a money reward of Rs 5000 for his dedication to his duty @assampolice.”
The photo of the 'hero in uniform' soon spread like wildfire, with netizens heaping him with praise for his commitment towards cleanliness. At the same time, some users lamented the poor condition of the roads in the city.
"He was actually doing it because he have to breathe and if he doesn't splash water then the dust from such unmetalled roads can kill anyone. I wish the roads have been better than he can focus on his job rather then doing cleaning," wrote one user, while another said, "Brilliant Job Kalita Ji! It's always being a Privilege to have responsible Citizens Like you. Keep it up/"
