Guwahati, April 29, 2020:

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed that at least 10 people from Assam have tested for COVID-19 in New Delhi, putting rest to new rumours that the people of Assam are immune to the strand.

Sarma said that 10 people from Assam, including seven belonging to the CRPF, have tested positive in New Delhi. “A CRPF personnel from Assam has passed away owing to COVID -19, a cancer patient was tested COVID positive and later, he died. This is significant for this holds key to what we have saying regarding to the second wave of infection and one must remember we are still not out of danger.”

Sarma added that these cases are testimony to the fact that people of Assam are not immune to COVID -19, adding that some organisations had approached him seeking permission to start research on immunity of Assamese people to COVID-19.

Addressing the press here today, Sarma said on Tuesday, Assam reported two cases of COVID-19, including one case of a 16 year old girl. Her case surfaced almost after 36 days, Sarma said, adding that this is "worrisome and Deputy Commissioner of Bongaigaon has been asked to investigate in detail."

Sarma said that the Markaz happened on March 12 and almost after 36 days Bongaigaon case has come to light.

It may be mentioned here that in Assam out of the 37 patients, except one all are related to Nizamuddin Markaz, one person is dead. The only patient who is not linked to the Markaz gathering hails from Guwahati and has been discharged.

At the same time, the Minister has proposed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation to airlift 850 patients of Assam stranded in different places of India. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We want to bring back these people. We are also working out on how to bring back stranded people from Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.”
