Guwahati,August 31, 2019:

Assam's Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has expressed his dissatisfaction with the National Register of Citizens (NRC), has reiterated his demand for a 'reverification'.

After the publication of the final NRC draft, earlier today, the BJP Minister has alleged that many legitimate citizens have been excluded from the NRC. "Names of many Indian citizens who migrated from Bangladesh as refugees prior to 1971, have not been included in the NRC because authorities refused to accept refugee certificates. Many names got included because of manipulation of legacy data as alleged by many", he wrote on social media.

Himanta Biswa Sarma further reiterated the demand for a "reverification". "I reiterate that, as requested by Central and State governments, at least 20% reverification (bordering districts) and 10% re-verification (remaining districts) should be allowed by Hon'ble Apex court for a correct and fair", he wrote.

It may be mentioned here that earlier, the Central as well as State Governments, had demanded a 're-verification', but the appeal was turned down by the Supreme Court.

Many senior BJP leaders have shown disillusionment with the NRC, and there have been multiple allegations that the NRC includes the names of many "illegal Bangaldeshis", whereas the names of genuine citizens have been omitted.

More than nineteen lakh people have been excluded from the final NRC draft published earlier.
