Himanta Biswa Sarma meets Neiphiu Rio in Delhi to discuss 'border management'

NEW DELHI: Assam Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday met Nagaland Chief Minister N Rio in New Delhi and discussed strategic matters including border management and development.

The chief ministers' discussions come amid reports of turbulence along the Assam-Nagaland border in Jorhat district, especially in the Dissou forest area which lies in contested territory.

He tweeted, “today in New Delhi met Hon CM Nagaland Sri @Neiphiu_Rio. We discussed issues of mutual interest and how the two governments can work together and collaborate on strategic matters including border management & development”.

when around one hundred personnel led by Assam Police attempted to establish a camp near Vikuto village under Tzürangkong range, Mokokchung district bordering Mariani on Tuesday morning.

According to a report in Nagaland Post, the contingent comprising of around 100 personnel– 50 Assam Police personnel, 30 home guards, and forest personnel– led by a police officer in the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) went near Vikuto village area at around 4 a.m. and began to set up camp/outpost.

Last month, an MLA from Assam -- Rupjyoti Kurmi -- had gone with a police escort to the same area and claimed that he had been greeted with bullets by villagers from Nagaland.

Amid escalating tensions and accusations of 'land grabbing', Special Assam DGP GP Singh along with other senior district administration and police officials visited the spot on May 28 and held talks with authorities of Nagaland at the site the tension was defused

Later in the day, Sarma also called on Union Minister for Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi.

Sarma during his visit also met Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani and held a discussion with her on several issues of women and child development.
