Addressing a gathering at Dibrugarh, Himanta Biswa Sarma took up the issue of Pulwama terrorist attack and drew parallels between Kashmir and the development of anti-national sentiment in Assam.

Sarma said, “Today, we take an oath that Kashmir will never be seen in Assam. The Pulwama incident has created a sense of fear among the people of Assam. The recent developments in the state have raised the question, will Assam turn into another Kashmir? In the blast that took place in Bihar’s Bodh Gaya, the main culprit was from Barpeta. The NIA has also submitted a report that a few months back, a Hijbul-Muzahiddin extremist who was involved in a blast at Kashmir, belonged to Hojai district of Assam.”

“At a time when the entire nation is mourning the Pulwama attack, anti-national posts like ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ are popping up on social media platforms, mostly from Assam. The development of closeness of terrorist groups and Maulana has been noticed in the state. As we move from Koliabor to middle Assam and lower Assam, we can feel the development of such anti-national sentiments that support Pakistan and oppose Indian culture,” he added.

Targeting a group of intellectuals and media personnel, Sarma also pointed on the encroachment of Moinbari Satra lands. He added that in these areas, the women TET teachers will not be able to go and teach children, due to fears of being attacked.

Saying that whenever the BJP will go weaker and the feeling of nationhood will sink low, anti-national sentiments will keep rising. Citing an example, he stated, “In Barpeta’s Madhav Chandra Choudhury College, after winning the general election, the General Secretary thanked the voters in the Arabic language rather than Assamese, Hindi or English. The situation is so bleak that in any case if India- Pakistan develops any conflict, there will be a higher number of Pakistani supporters", he lamented.
