BARHAMPUR: Assam BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma today took a jibe at Barhampur Congress candidate Suresh Bora mocking him as a “sycophant” of senior Congress leader Rakibul Hussain.
“Since the time I saw Suresh Bora, I have observed he such a sycophant of Rakibul Hussain. I don’t know whether he has faith in Allah or God, but I am sure he has full faith in Rakibul Hussain. And these days, he has also developed a faith in Badruddin Ajmal,” the North East Democratic Alliance convenor said.
Drawing a parallel between Hussain and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal, the BJP minister also said: “If you look at Jitu Goswami (BJP candidate from Barhampur), you can see the image of Narendra Modi behind him. But, if you look at Suresh Bora, you’ll see the images of Rakibul Hussain and Ajmal behind him.”

“Ajmal is someone who wants madrassas instead of medical colleges and engineering colleges. He wants our women to be child producing machines. He is quite the opposite of what we want. Do you think tax payers’ money should be used for madrassa or medical college? Ajmal’s thinking is narrow. He thinks giving birth to many children would increase population of his community and become majority in a particular place.
“Is child marriage and making a 24-year-old woman mother of 10 good? If we point out the evils, Rakibul Hussain and Ajmal call us communal ... So, this election is not about Suresh Bora and Jitu Goswami. It’s about Modi and Ajmal. And, we stand by Modi for progress and prosperity,” Sarma added.
This is the first time the BJP is contesting from Barhampur in 35 years since the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) came into existence. Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who had been representing the constituency since 1985, was denied ticket from the seat this time.

He also mocked the five guarantees campaign of the Congress. “Do reputed companies like Tata or Godrej give you guarantee? Guarantee is given for only sub-standard quality products. During the COVID-19 outbreak, our government provided all medical facilities, free food grain, cooking gas etc. Did those helps come with guarantee?
“We did those because we are members of one family. We don’t need guarantee from one another. It’s a different case with the Congress that has come from Italy. They need guarantee to convince people,” the eloquent orator said.
