BAKSA: Senior Bodoland People's Front (BPF) leader and Goybari (Baksa) candidate Chandi Basumatary today tore into Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the latter's election campaign in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) ahead of the polls in the Council.

"People are afraid that there will be violence once again. They do not want strife and trouble, they want peace. Therefore, they want Hagrama Mohilary to be the Chief once again. Therefore, we will win the election with an absolute majority," Basumatary said today addressing media.

The BPF leader also claimed that the BJP supporters at the rallies are being bussed in from other parts of the state. "This proves that there will be no saffron wave here this time around," he said.

Weighing in on Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma flurry of election-related activities in the BTC in the lead up to the polls, Basumatary commentary that the leader's incendiary words against the BPF leaders have intilled fear in the minds of the people of the region. "The way he has campaigned has created a fear psychosis in the minds of the people of the region and if it continues, could lead to more violence in the BTC."

Chandi Basumatary also added that all the communities in the region shall vote for the BPF party and a win for the party is certain.

Speaking about his own prospects in the polls, Basumatary said that he will win the election against his prime competitor United People's Party Liberal (UPPPL) leader Promod Boro.

In 28 Goibari (ST) BTCC, 70,358 voters will cast their votes, of which 35,940 are males and 34,418 female voters. The administration has set up 87 polling stations, of which 12 are very sensitive, 18 sensitive and remote, while the rest 6 are comparatively safe. The candidates are Chandi Basumatary (BPF), Hemanta Kumar Rabha (BJP), Promod Boro (UPPL), Maheswar Rabha (VPI), Dilip Kumar Sarania (Independent) and Rabin Rabha (Independent).

Earlier, Sarma has been slammed by senior BPF leader Anjali Daimary for his divisive rhetoric ahead of the polls that the Minister views as a "semifinal" ahead of the Assembly Polls in 2021.

“Everybody has the right to contest elections, but the way they (the BJP) have entered — as if to take revenge with insults and seeking to divide society through a divisive campaign– is something that we heartily condemn,” said Daimary.
