An organization known as 'Hindu Kyanti' has lodged an FIR against noted Assam intellectual Hiren Gohan, who has been steadfast in his opposition to the BJP-led Government's amendment of the Citizenship Act.
The organization has alleged that Gohain has supported the speech made by a JNU student, Sharjeel Imam, wherein he had stated that Assam and the rest of Northeast India should be cut off from the mainland to teach the Government a lesson.

“If 5 lakh Muslims are organised, then we can cut off the North-east from rest of India. If we cannot do permanently…at least we can cut North-east from India for months”, Imam had said. A clip of him saying these words was soon doing the rounds on social media, causing an outcry among Northeast Indian Governments as well as the general citizenry.
Imam, who is one of the main organizers of the ongoing protest in Shaheen Bagh, was later arrested from Jehanabad in Bihar on Tuesday in a sedition case.

However, the Assam intellectual Gohain, who has now landed in the proverbial soup for allegedly supporting Sharjeel's statement, has clarified that he did not mean to support the JNU student's speech and his comments have been "taken out of context".
Meanwhile, the situation has further escalated in New Delhi varsities in the wake of the mass protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, some of which turned violent. On Thursday, a man opened fire near Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi and shouted “Yeh Lo Azaadi” (Take this, your freedom). A Jamia student was injured in the firing. According to reports, the man was detained by the Police and the injured student was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital nearby.
